Why Lifeline is a lifeline for best connection

From 1985, Lifeline has provided phone services to qualifying low-income families. The aim is to ensure that all Americans have access to reliable phone service as well as security and opportunities. These services enable members of low-income families to be able to connect to jobs, have access to emergency services via the phone line, and keep family members in touch with each other. 

The Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) administers the program. In 2016, broadband was included in the program as a support service. USAC is responsible for collecting data, support calculations, maintenance, as well as disbursement of the program.

A study revealed that low-income families receive fewer benefits than middle-income family members. In addition, very low-income families are families whose income does not exceed 50% of the median income for the area in which they live.

Government Assistance Program

Lifeline is a government assistance program that provides eligible households with a monthly discount on their telephone service. There are a number of requirements to participate, but the great news is that participating households can qualify for monthly credit of $9.25 per household member, up to a maximum of $34.25. These credits can be applied to any provider of basic telephone service. Some carriers have chosen to cover the entire cost of the discount so that the Lifeline Assistance Credit is provided for free.
