How To Fix Arduino Port Not Showing Up On Mac And Windows

An open-source hardware and software business called Arduino creates hardware development kits and software that are simple to use and allow you to design and construct electronic projects and devices.

The Atmel AVR microprocessor series serves as the foundation for the Arduino. But sometimes the Arduino port might show some errors. Many users have reported that their Arduino port is not visible on their operating system.

This is a pretty typical problem that most Arduino beginners, and occasionally even those with intermediate experience, encounter.

When you try to fix the problem using Windows tools, the problem will still not be fixed because your IDE won’t display the linked Arduino board and your Device Manager will state “unknown USB device.”

Hence, in this article, let us discuss various ways to fix the malfunctioning Arduino port.

Quick Steps to Enable the Arduino Port

Below listed are the systematic method steps you can try to fix your Arduino port.

Update the port drivers

If the Arduino drivers are out-of-date and you’re using a Windows computer, Arduino ports won’t often appear. If so, follow the instructions below to upgrade.

  1. Open the Start menu on your computer desktop.
  2. Go to the search panel and enter Device manager in it.
  3. Hit the Enter button.
  4. Select the first result that appears.
  5. A Device manager window will open up.
  6. Scroll through the list of options and select the Other devices option.
  7. Expand the option.
  8. Now, look for any unrecognized Arduino device and double-click on it.
  9. Select the Properties option.
  10. A Properties window will open up.
  11. Go to the Driver tab.
  12. Choose the Update driver option.
  13. Now, select “Search automatically for the updated driver”.
  14. Your windows system will automatically start the update process.
  15. Wait till the update process finishes.
  16. A confirmation message will appear – “Windows has successfully updated your driver software”.
  17. Perform a check on your system to check the successful update process.

You will need to remove and again install the CH340 driver to resolve the problem if this approach does not work for you. You can set up the driver for both Windows and macOS using the following solutions.

Install the Arduino driver on the Windows system

An Arduino board will immediately have a driver loaded so that it can communicate with your computer when it is connected to a Windows machine. The driver, which is visible in Device Manager, will set up the Arduino as a virtual COM port.

Follow the below instructions to perform this method.

  1. Open the Start menu on your computer desktop.
  2. Go to the search panel and enter the Control Panel in it.
  3. Hit the Enter button.
  4. Select the first result that appears.
  5. A Control Panel window will open up.
  6. Scroll through the list of options and select the System Security option.
  7. Now, select the System option.
  8. A System window will appear.
  9. Hit the Device manager option to open it.
  10. Tick the checkboxes near the Ports COM & LPT options.
  11. You will find an open port of the option Arduino UNO COMxx.
  12. Now, select the Arduino UNO COMxx option and right-click on it.
  13. Choose the Update Driver Software option.
  14. Now, choose “Browse my computer for driver software”.
  15. A browsing window will open up.
  16. Search and go to the driver file of your Arduino software.
  17. Find the Arduino.inf driver named file and select it.
  18. Now hit the OK button.
  19. Your windows system will confirm the action and begin the installation process of the driver.

Install the Arduino driver on the Mac system

An Arduino board will immediately have a driver loaded so that it can communicate with your computer when it is connected to a Mac machine.

Follow the below instructions to perform this method.

  1. Open your Mac operating system.
  2. Go to the downloaded files on your computer and search the file FTDIUSBSerialDriver_v2_2_18.dmg.
  3. Select and double-click on it to open.
  4. You will find two driver files if you are having the OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
  5. Select the driver file which is compatible with your Mac operating system and open it.
  6. In most cases, the second will be the appropriate one.
  7. Let the installation process finish.
  8. Hit the Close button.
  9. Perform a check on your system to check the successful installation process.
  10. Now, move to the Tools option.
  11. Choose the Serial Port option.
  12. Search for the option named USB serial.
  13. If you find it then you are good to go.

When you are unsure of the OS X version you have, choose About This Mac from the menu that appears when you press the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your screen. This will reveal the OS X version you have.
