They have the unique ability to fly at high speeds, causing the buzzing sound produced by the flapping of their wings, hence their namesake.
Hummingbirds can fly as fast as the wind, so seeing them in real life can be difficult. Most of us have probably only seen a hummingbird through pictures on the internet.
Why not learn how to draw a hummingbird so you can admire its beauty up close? By drawing this bird you can have a beautiful hummingbird at your fingertips.
Luckily, we have created a step-by-step tutorial on how to draw a hummingbird, summarized in 9 simple and easy steps.
This comprehensive tutorial makes drawing a hummingbird easier and more fun. So go ahead, grab a piece of paper and your favourite pencil and let’s draw together!
How to Draw A Hummingbird
Step 1
Starting on the right side of the paper, draw a long, thin, pointed shape to create the hummingbird’s beak.
One of the most distinctive features of a hummingbird is its long, pointed beak. It’s basically the beak that acts as a protective cover for its tongue, which the hummingbird uses to collect nectar from a flower.
Step 2
The crown is essentially the top of the hummingbird’s head. Outline the top of your hummingbird’s head by simply drawing a curved line from the tip of the beak.
When drawn correctly, the line should appear as a gradient as shown in the figure.
Don’t forget to add tufts of feathers to the surface of the outline to make your bird look more realistic!
Step 3
Create your hummingbird’s chin by drawing a line down from the bottom of the beak.
Next, close the outline of your hummingbird’s head by drawing several connected curved lines at the bottom, forming fluffy pieces of feathers.
Step 4
Draw a downward curved line under the hummingbird’s chin. Then repeat the same steps until the outline extends to your belly.
Remember not to press too hard with the pencil. Draw this step with a light hand to create natural thick-to-thin strokes. The light strokes will help the feathers appear natural on your hummingbird’s body.
Step 5
Draw a line with a curved tip starting at the bottom of your hummingbird’s body.
Next, add more curved lines near the endpoint of the line we just drew to create the look of fluffy feathers.
Step 6
Structure the tail emerging from the endpoint of the hummingbird’s body. The tail can be easily created by drawing several overlapping pointed shapes until the desired shape is achieved.
As shown in the figure, we drew a closed tail. However, you can design a fanned or open tail for your hummingbird. Draw the tail however you like. It all depends on you!
Step 7
Draw a diagonal line straight up from the hummingbird’s crown. Next, draw more feathers side by side on the underside of the wing.
When you’re done, the shape of the wing should resemble a thin diagonal triangle.
We think the hummingbird’s wings look best when they are spread wide. So that’s what we drew in the illustration. However, you can draw his wings absolutely however you want.
You can keep the wings perfectly still on the side of the hummingbird’s body, or let them lift slightly upwards.
Step 8
Repeat the previous step on the other side. Because the hummingbird is positioned sideways, only the top of its other wing is visible, as seen in the image.
Step 9
Draw a small perfect circle on his head. Next, draw a small circle in the eye.
Next, shade the entire eye except for the small circle inside to make the eye appear like it’s glowing, making your hummingbird even more adorable!
As you can see, the hummingbird is finally done! All that’s missing is a pop of color to make your hummingbird stand out!
Now that we have successfully drawn a hummingbird, it’s finally time for the most exciting part: choosing colors and coloring your drawing!
Hummingbirds are colorful bird species. They come in more than one color and come in a wide range of vibrant color combinations.
The most common colors they have are blue, red, green, and more vibrant colors! This gives you tons of color options to choose from when choosing colors for your awesome hummingbird design!
