5 Common Cancer Myths Debunked

Health is a blessing for sure and no one can deny this fact. Even if you suffer from a troubling throat during winters, you get irritated and want to recover as soon as possible. Health problems are troubling, no matter how big or small. Hearing about some of those can be pretty scary for us.

Cancer is one such health problem. It generally refers to the uncontrolled divisions of cells in your body. These uncontrollably divided cells can appear as a lump or tumor in your body. Cancer can appear at one particular location in your body or can spread to other areas as well.

Many things can increase your risk of suffering from cancer. It can come along with the genes you get from your parents. Alongside your genes, your dietary and lifestyle practices can make it a big thing for you in future. However, when it comes to the treatment of cancer, medical science advances have enabled us to get it cured. When I was a child, one of my aunts was diagnosed with blood cancer and taken to the best oncologist in Lahore. Her battle with cancer changed my overall perception about cancer.

Considering this experience, I realized that we have been poorly informed about these diseases and there is a lot people need to know about them. Here are some of the common myths and facts about cancer which I think you need to be aware of.

1- Your cancer may spread after biopsy

Biopsy is the practice of removing a part of an affected organ and getting it tested for the confirmation of disease. However, many people believe that a biopsy practice can spread their tumor. But this is not true in any case. Removing a part of affected tissue can’t spread your tumor to grow so next time our physician asks you to get your biopsy done, you can certainly go after it.

2- A lump is always cancer

There has been a lot of information circulating regarding cancers. A part of this information says that you see visual lumps in your body that indicate the occurrence of cancer. Presence of these lumps is often used for the purpose of self-diagnosis. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you start seeing every lump cancerous. So, this is merely a myth that if you are seeing a lump in your body it’s cancerous.

3- Cancer therapies are painful

Next in the list of cancer myths comes that cancer therapy can be painful. This particularly refers to chemotherapy. Chemotherapy has remained quite in discussion over the last few years. These therapies may have several side effects including painful signs and symptoms. However, these therapies are not as painful when compared with the positive effects these bring.

4- Cancer is contagious

Well, this is merely a myth and people believe that cancer can spread from person to person. However, you need to be very clear about the fact that cancer isn’t a flu or cough that spreads from person to person. Most cancers are genetic in origin so you are not likely to get it if anyone in your vicinity is suffering from the cancer.

5- You can’t get cancer if none of your family member suffers from it

Cancers can be genetic in origin but this doesn’t mean that all cancers are genetic. Many people believe that cancer is genetic in origin and this certainly gives us a reason to think that you are not likely to get cancer if any of your family members is not suffering from it. Other than genetics, there are many other reasons for cancer that you need to be mindful of. You need to be specially concerned about the lifestyle causes of cancer.

Bottom Line!

Cancers can be deadly and can affect many people. The disease is troubling to even think about it. It comes with its fair share of emotional and financial burden. Many things can determine your risk of suffering from cancers. You can do many things to minimize your risk of suffering from cancer but this all starts with the right understanding of the disease. There are many misconceptions about the disease. We currently need mass awareness programs to promote a cancer free community.
